I picked it -because- it was hard lol. It took me several months to finish it and then after the first time wearing it, I took another couple of weeks to fix it and work out all the kinks.

Thank you! All the armour slash wing thingies, I suppose you could call them, were made out of 0.02 inch thick styrene plastic backed with either craft foam (for the armour) or cardboard for the wing thingies because its stronger.

When you mean backed, do you mean you created a basic structure and then layered craft foam or cardboard on top? Is it really lightweight to carry/easy to cut styrene? The wings on your cosplay are huge +o+ I'm thinking about buying some for the base of some really big prop wings I'm going to make but I'm not to sure about how easy it'll be to cut it. I don't have any machines to cut anything. And thank you soo much for replying to my comment! I thought it would be lost among the sea of complimenting epicness.

not at all! sorry for the late reply, I was at the cottage last week ^_____^. Styrene is really light (which is one of the reasons I use it) and you can cut it with scissors but I use it more for a smooth finish because its not very strong on its own. What I did was I drew out the shape I wanted on the styrene and cut it out and then glued cardboard to the back of it to strengthen it and then ran PVC piping through it in order to slide it into the harness that I wore to carry them. What kind of wings did you want to make? Maybe I can help.

:0 I see..do you know if styrene takes acrylic paint well? Since I might not overlay it with cardboard on certain moving parts. By chance, where did you buy your styrene? I'm not too sure how much I'll need for my wings x.x I'm trying to make wings that will manually fold at the joints. Heres a pic: [link] , also another link of how I want the wings to move [link] I'm guessing the part that attaches the wings to the person's back should be some sort of backpack. But I have no idea how to get the wings to attach to the backpack. Did you use a certain type of glue to hold all the styrene together? x.x Sorry for all these questions and thank you so much for offering help!

No it doesn't take acrylic paint very well :/ unfortunately. You have to use spray paint. I ordered mine from a place near where I live, which there is likely one near you as well. You can also order it online but it costs more because of shipping and such. Just look up styrene or ABS plastic sheets. If you do end up using styrene you are going to want to sandwich something in between two pieces (like cardboard or craftfoam) for strength because the styrene is very flexible not rigid. I know for props such as these you want to keep it light weight, but if you want the to be fold able you might want to find something stronger, at least for the joints. To attach, I used a back pack for mine as well as a corset because it gave me extra stability. I am not quite sure how to explain what I did in words, but I screwed a flag bracket, like this one:[link] to the back of it and used PVC piping to branch off to the wings. As for glue, hot glue is the only thing i have tried that worked. So I stuck with it. Only you have to be careful and not use the glue directly on the styrene because it will melt it. I might try to post some kind of video if i find the time slash figure out how to do it haha. Hopefully some of that made some sort of sense and can help you. XD

Would styrene be good for external shells? You said it has a smooth finish, as in glossy or just matte? I'm trying to find types of materials that have a glossy plastic finish to them.

+o+ I think I meant spray paint when I said acrylic, I use so many different paints that I get mixed up xD Do you know if styrene can be sanded easily? As for the joints, I was thinking of drilling a hole of some sort and overlaying each wing piece, kind of like stacking armor. Did you use a heat gun to mold the styrene? I might end up using it to create the back pack as well. I don't mind if the wings cant bend at the area where it is attached to the backpack. I'm just concerned about the rest of the folds. I don't know if the backpack alone can support all the weight of the wings. What did you use to cut your styrene? :0 Sorry I keep asking questions. You've been really helpful! :iconsupertighthugplz:

reading your replies, I dont think you understand what exactly styrene is. First off, its a plastic, and therefore you can imagine if you sanded it you would end up with a very rough scratchy surface (imagine using sandpaper on an action figure). Second, its VERY thin, 0.02 of an inch and comes in flat sheets similar to a poster board. You can buy it thicker, but if you do it will snap if you bend it. This is why I glue other things to it to make it thicker and stronger (ie. cardboard or craftfoam). The styrene itself is really just to give you a smooth finish. You definitely wouldn't want to make a back pack out if it. Again, as I said before, I use scissors to cut it because it is thin enough.
